HISTORY
Gulf States Health Services Inc. (GSHS) was formed in March of 2001 and acquired its initial six rehabilitation hospitals in July of that same year.
During 2002, the corporate team focused on key operational goals and strategies. Two underperforming units were closed and two new facilities were opened, maintaining a network of six hospitals located in the following communities: Bogalusa, Abbeville, Clinton, Hammond, LaPlace and Raceland.
Beginning in late 2002, the Gulf States network began evolving into both a rehabilitation and long-term acute care provider. Four of its existing hospitals were converted from rehab to long-term acute care providers: Hammond, Clinton, St. Anne, and Bogalusa Rehabilitation Hospitals respectively. This strategy has allowed Gulf States to diversify its healthcare services focused directly on the needs of the community.
In mid-2003, agreements were signed to develop and manage rehabilitation hospitals in Baton Rouge and Lafayette, and a 100-bed orthopedic specialty hospital in Oklahoma City. By the fall of 2003, Gulf States had entered into a management accord for the short term operational oversight of the Dixon Medical Centers (Covington and Denham Springs) until licensure and regulatory issues could be addressed and corrected prior to the subsequent acquisition of its 117 long-term acute care beds.
In November of 2003, Institutional Pharmacies of Louisiana LLC was formed as a joint venture of GSHS and other partners. This independent pharmacy company was created to service the Gulf States Health Services Network and penetrate the soft third-party supplier markets in long-term care facilities throughout Louisiana and Arkansas, and to offer niche compounding products for acute care hospitals in outsourcing arrangements.
With the acquisition of the Dixon Medical Centers in Spring 2004, Gulf States Health Services doubled in size. It was at this time that the organization began branding its name and called the newest affiliates Gulf States LTAC of Covington and Gulf States LTAC of Denham Springs.
And in late 2004, Gulf States earned the Join Commission Gold Seal of Approval (TM) by demonstrating compliance with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare organization's national standards for healthcare quality and safety. The accreditation is for a 3 year period and includes all eight of the organizations hospitals.
